  • Dell Partners with Skype

    Via TMCNet:

Skype and Dell announced on Wednesday that they have joined forces for faster VoIP calls. The companies agreed to ship Skype software with new Dell XPS mobile systems, which include the XPS M1210 and XPS M2010.

The new deal calls for Dell to provide its customers with access to Skype’s voice and video Internet calling software. According to the deal, Dell will pre-load Skype on the XPS 2010, a mobile entertainment system, which features a 20.1-inch high-definition display with integrated Web cam. The XPS 1210 can also be configured with Skype as part of an optional audio-video communications package also comprised of an integrated rotating Web cam, noise-isolation earbuds and mobile broadband capability.

I’m not sure about the effectiveness of this approach. XPS systems are Dell’s high-end gaming systems. Gamers and users who purchase high-end, high performance systems are already well-tuned with Skype. Now, installing Skype on low-end machines, on the other hand, and introducing VoiP to less tech-savvy customers would have been a pretty bold and effective move.

  • iPod integrated into Major League Baseball workouts

How the Colorado Rockies use iPod to hit big

As if it wasn’t enough that Apple’s uber-cool device lets you rock out to your favorite tunes and watch television shows, now it can help your batting average. The Colorado Rockies now use iPod to master their swings:

The Rockies moved beyond iPod’s music, its most common clubhouse function, through creative intervention during spring training. It began when Rockies assistant video coordinator Brian Jones was downloading video of hitters’ swings and burning a CD. In a sport where players wear sunglasses equipped with MP3 players, he figured there had to be a more practical application.

So Mike Hamilton, the team’s video coordinator, purchased a video iPod and the two began tinkering. They were looking to integrate information more seamlessly with the sport’s transient lifestyle. They showed the finished product to veteran first baseman Todd Helton, who loved it. Infielder Jamey Carroll became the first lab rat, turning his iPod into a video library of his swings.

  • Recover your bandwidth from Windows XP

A handy tutorial from the Google Community:

Windows XP uses 20 percent of your bandwidth for its own purpose (searching for updates and interrogating your machine, etc).

Here’s how to get it back:

Click Start–> Run–> type “gpedit.msc” without the quotation marks.

This opens the group policy editor.

    Then go to:

Local Computer Policy–> Computer Configuration–> Administrative Templates–> Network–> QOS Packet Scheduler–> Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab :

“By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.”

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20 percent.

This works on XP Pro and 2000.

  • Google skips Memorial Day Art

Google has special logos to celebrate Arthur Conan Doyle’s Birthday, Mother’s Day, and Persian New Year…but not Memorial Day? They also don’t have one for Veterans Day, Flag Day, or Armed Forces Day. But, thankfully, they do have one for the Chinese New Year:

Google’s habit of celebrating holidays like New Year’s, Halloween, Christmas and Thanksgiving by altering its logo to match the season’s theme has been extended in the past to honor the birthdays of famous inventors, scientists, artists and musicians, as well as Earth Day and the Persian New Year, but on the day Americans honor those who died serving their country, it’s business as usual at the Internet-search giant.
